Why Catholicism as opposed to say, Mormonism?

(Preface: A lot of the LDS I know are fantastic people and, if I had to choose a religious group just based off of how the adherents live, LDS would be near, if not at, the top. I essentially want every state to be like Utah.)

Without getting into fundamental questions about theology (that gets complex, fast), I can answer this question this way --

When I decided to take religious texts more seriously, I had to have some limiting tools at my hands or else I'd get overwhelmed by the various different world religions or the tens of thousands of Christian Protestant sects.

One of those tools from my mental toolkit is the concept of Lindy institutions. This concept comes from Nassim Taleb's work and essentially says that the longer something has been around, the longer you can reasonably expect it to be around.

Combine this with some mental tools from Peter Kreeft and CS Lewis, that makes you have to pretty quickly deal with Orthodoxy or Catholicism as your Christian options. From there you can dig into core theological questions, questions on the primacy of the Bishop of Rome, and the history of Church miracles.
